Pottery Workshops...

Schools have noted Jennifer M. Stevens' enthusiasm to work with students of all ages and abilities.  Each workshop is tailor-made to better meet the needs of her students.  Stevens sees each student unique and enjoys finding creative approaches to teaching pottery.

Jennifer M. Stevens is a traditional and contemporary Iroquois Potter, she has trained under potters, Rose Kerstetter, Oneida, and Peter B. Jones, Seneca/Onondaga.  Stevens furthered her studies in ceramics with Don Taylor, and painting with James Cagle and Marilyn Stasiak at St. Norbert College, where she will be receiving her Bachelor's Degree at St. Norbert College in Studio Art.  She also has her art studio, Wakohsi•yó Studio where she creates pottery, paintings, and sculptures, and a "Seeds of Knowledge," Artist-in-Residence for schools.

Through her Oneida pottery Stevens has made great strides very young in her career now an instructor who is building respect for her craft and teaching locally and throughout Wisconsin.

  • Iroquois Pottery Workshops

Iroquois Pottery workshops for K-Adult;  Each workshop is designed and tailored based on time, intensity and age levels.

Beginner:  Hand building pots using the pinch pot method, and etching and stamping designs.

Intermediate:  Hand building pots using the pinch pot method, attaching coils, and finishing off decorating the pots with etching, stamping, and/or appliqueing their designs.

Advanced:  Hand building pots using the pinch pot method, attaching coils,  a collar and castellations to the tops of their pots, and finishing off decorating their pots with etching, stamping, and appliqueing designs, and/or relief sculpting.

Flash Firing (optional):  Jennifer M. Stevens can lead Students and Intructors in this fast firing technique while placing their pottery in a fire pit and burning leaves around their pots. Flash Firing gives your pottery the ancient pottery patina look.  (Reccomended for Intermediate to Advanced level students.)

    WHAT THE CRITICS SAY...
Jennifer “…was very flexible and tailored to her workshop to each grade level.” ~West DePere Middle School

"Jennifer was great.  She is a good teacher, kids were interested and she was very helpful to all the students." ~West De Pere Middle School

"Since this was the second time Jennifer Stevens has presented this workshop to our students, she knew what to expect of the children and how to address their questions.  She did a very good job helping the students with their project and taught us a lot of valuable tricks.  It is wonderful that she also shared her experiences and background with the students of whom many still have the "Disney," perspective.  Jennifer would be very good to teach a workshop like that to teachers."  ~Milwaukee German Immersion School

"SEEDS OF KNOWLEDGE" PROGRAMS / WORKSHOPS / RESIDENCIES
(please limit class size to 25 or less)

Pinch Pots
(kindergarten to 3rd grade, 45 minutes): This workshop introduces students to the start of Iroquois Pottery, the pinch pot. Students learn a brief history on and the first steps in making Iroquois pottery.

Pot of Thoughts
(3rd to 6th grade, 90 minutes): In this workshop, students learn about the uses and meanings of traditional Iroquois pottery and explore some contemporary ways of using a pot. In this hands-on workshop, students create a “class pot” using traditional Oneida techniques with the artists. Symbols and words are used to create the design elements that reflect the students’ ideas and thoughts.

Coil Pottery
(4th to 8th grade, 45 - 120 minutes): This workshop introduces students to hand built pottery, using clay coils and techniques to smooth and shape traditional Iroquois pots. Depending on time and student abilities, this workshop continues to introduce pottery styles through the addition of the neck and collar of the Iroquois pots.

Iroquois Pottery
(9th to 12th grade, 120 – 200 minutes): In this workshop, students build traditional pots adding necks and collars to the pots with embellishments and relief sculptures. With additional time, Jennifer demonstrates a flash fire technique taking already fired pots and putting them into fire pits for an organic finish.
