Welcome to my website: Waˀkohsi•yó Studio!
(Wah-goh-see-yo)
Jennifer Stevens is considered a multi-faceted artist... as a vocalist and visual artist. She is an American soprano, opera singer and recitalist, composer, painter and potter. She was given the Oneida name, Waˀkohsi·yó (Pronounced Wah-go-see-yo) which means... a "Peacock." She continues to show how she grows into her name through the arts; a bird of many feathers...
Artist Statement:
“Being open and versatile is important in today’s world… I believe in embracing all cultures in a good way and celebrating life through music, art, and my creative expression.”

Why Waˀkohsi·yó Studio?
Waˀkohsi·yó (pronounced: Wah-goh-see-yo) is the name my grandmother gave to me. She said it means "Peacock" or a description of a bird with a long beautiful tail. In the Oneida way it is what the Creator calls your spirit. No one in the world is supposed to have your name and it can't be given until seven years after your death. Each person's name is intended to be unique much like we are! I am naturally a multi-faceted person with a great love for the arts! I decided to call my small business, "Wakohsiyo Studio," which represents my fan...my array of loves such as; Singing classical music, composing classical contemporary music, painting, making Oneida pottery, creative writing, and encouraging children in the arts!!!

"We were fortunate to have Jennifer Stevens-Sears grace Indian Summer Festival with her beautiful voice... she's an opera singer, classical vocalist and did you know she's an accomplished painter and a potter as well? Jennifer is a proud Oneida Nation of Wisconsin tribal member who blends traditional with contemporary to create true artistry in all that she does. She also writes, produces and shares the spotlight with other Native artists to present a richly diverse representation of Native people and culture, breaking down stereotypes and showing that as a People, we exist and excel in ways that may come as a bit of a surprise to mainstream culture. We encourage you to watch the very inspiring program: "Owe 'la: The Music Within Jennifer Stevens" on Wisconsin Public Television / PBS, or you can click on the link below."
